Data is the new oil in 21st century!

But raw data by themselves, alone, are not useful. Data Science is the encompassing and multidimensional field to discover, interpret and communicate significant patterns in data. It applies the theories and techniques from different disciplines such as statistics, mathematics, data modeling, computer science and machine learning on data to extract insightful information.

And, what’s machine learning?  Here’s a definition from Arther Samuel (1959) –

“Machine Learning is the field of study that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed.”

Oh no, so much to learn before you can make sense of the data! How is the regular non-programmer Joe going to benefit from Data Science?

Gaining valuable information from data through Data Science

Well, here’s some Good News! You don’t need to be a data scientist or be well-versed in all the disciplines. As long as you have some knowledge of statistics & math, you need to be equipped with one other tool (see para below) for your Data Science journey.

First Step towards Data Science

The First Step is to learn Python, an open-source, simple and versatile language that is widely used in many domains, particularly in data science. Python has  a huge repertoire of supporting libraries (a.k.a. frameworks) for all kinds of applications. An example is the awesome Scikit-learn framework for implementing data models and common machine learning algorithms. Using Python + Scikit-learn, you can identify meaningful patterns in data.
